Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)

« Back to Glossary Index

“Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) is a designation used by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to indicate that a particular substance is considered safe for its intended use in food and is not subject to the usual food additive regulations. This designation is given to substances that have a long history of safe consumption or that have been scientifically shown to be safe based on available evidence and expert opinions. GRAS status means that the substance is not required to undergo the same rigorous testing and approval process as other food additives, but it still must meet certain safety criteria and be supported by scientific data to be considered safe for consumption.
